Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone talks about his team’s win over Manchester City.
Atletico won 2-1 against Manchester City in the second leg of the Coupang Play Series at Seoul World Cup Stadium at 8:40 p.m. on Tuesday.
In the 21st minute of the second half, Atletico’s Memphis Depay came into the center from the left and exchanged a two-on-one pass with Angel Correa, and on the return pass, Depay fired a right-footed mid-range shot directly from the arc circle to rattle the City goal.
In the 29th minute, Atletico winger Yannick Carrasco made a quick solo run from left to center and unleashed a powerful right-footed shot from just outside the arc circle that rattled the City goal. In the 40th minute, City pulled a goal back when Javier Dias headed in Sergio Gomez’s left-footed corner from the left at the near post, but could not avoid a 1-2 defeat.
The game was delayed by 40 minutes due to rain, forcing City to miss the post-match press conference and mixer zone interview before heading straight to Incheon Airport. Atletico held their official post-match press conference with Diego Simeone saying, “Thank you to the fans. It was raining and the weather conditions were bad, 꽁머니 so thank you for your patience,” and “I was happy to see so many Atletico fans in the stadium, and I think it’s a good sign for Atletico’s growth in the Asian market.”
When I asked Simeone about his impressions of Korea during the two matches against Team K League and Man City, he said: “Korean fans are respectful and orderly citizens. It was difficult because there was a lot of traffic, but I am grateful to the Korean fans.”
“We played well in the first half against Man City. We did what we did well in the second half last year and the players were serious. We showed a lot against the best opponent in the world and I think this will help us do well in the league.”
