Jeon Mi-re (18), an all-rounder at Gyeongbuk High School, is greedy. I want to challenge both the pitcher and hitter in the professional world as I do now.
Gyeongbuk High School beat Deoksu High School 4-3 in the round of 16 of the 57th Presidential Cup National High School Baseball Championship (sponsored by the JoongAng Ilbo and Korea Baseball Softball Association) held at Mokdong Stadium in Seoul on the 6th. He struggled through the biggest hurdle to continue winning the Presidential Cup, which had been cut off since 1974.
At the center was Jeon Mi-re, the ‘Didoryu’. Jeon Mi-re came out as the designated hitter for the fourth time in the game. In the first at-bat in the first inning, he swung the bat lightly against Deoksu High left-hander Jeong Hyun-woo and hit. Jeon Mi-re left the dugout and headed for the mound before the batter had even turned one turn. He took the mound as a pitcher with two outs and second base in the top of the second inning with a 1-0 lead. Judging that it would be a 1-point fight, Gyeongbuk High School coach Lee Jun-ho quickly threw the winning number.
Unfortunately, Mir Jeon gave Lee Jae-hyeong a hit as the first batter and allowed a tie. However, from the 3rd inning, the out count was built up one after another. He quickly caught a bunt ball rolling in front of him on first base in the 5th inning safely and connected it with a double hit. It was a scene where his excellent judgment and athletic ability shone. He gave up two runs in the sixth inning for a 3–1 lead, but Jeon Mir did not come down the mound. He threw 102 until the ninth inning, allowing 6 hits, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts and 2 runs in 7 1/2 innings and became the winning pitcher. His at-bat also added two hits, going 3-for-4.
After the game, Jeon Mir said, “The weather was hot, but I tried not to sag. He defended,” he said.
In the past, there were many players who were both pitchers. Song Jin-woo, Cho Gye-hyeon, Lee Dae-jin, Lee Seung-yeop, Ryu Hyun-jin, Kim Byeong-hyeon, Choo Shin-soo, and Lee Dae-ho all made good grades as pitchers and hitters during their school days. After the 21st century, there has been a tendency to focus on one thing recently, but as Shohei Ohtani plays an active role, the number of players who double as a pitcher has increased little by little.
Among them, Jeon Mi-ri stands out by far. Mir Jeon throws a fast ball at 150 km/h from the mound. He appeared in 12 official games this year, won 4, gave up 19 walks and struck out 46 while throwing 56 innings. The jeju and guwi, all of them are of a high standard.
Jeon Mi-re, who is at bat, is also excellent. He had a batting average of .338 (24 hits in 71 at-bats) with 3 home runs and 30 RBI. His strikeouts were only 10, and he picked up 21 walks. The powerful swing that comes from his solid physique is attractive. His batting speed is currently known to be the fastest among high school hitters.
Gyeongbuk High School won the Blue Dragon Flag held right before the Presidential Cup, and Jeon Mir won the MVP award. The Presidential Cup was held immediately, but Jeon Mir showed his true value. He laughed, saying, “I am not weak. I am a bit weak, but when I play, adrenaline surges and I eat and live.”
The draft for the 2024 season is shaping up to some extent. With Jang Hyeon-seok (Masan Yongma High School) declaring that he will go to the U.S., the prevailing prospect is that left-hander Hwang Jun-seo (Jangchung High School) and right-hander Kim Taek-yeon (Incheon High School) will go to the Hanwha Eagles and Doosan Bears in first and second place respectively.먹튀검증
Jeon Mi-re is expected to be nominated for the first round along with Gangneung High School pitcher Cho Dae-hyeon, Whimoon High School pitcher Kim Hwi-gun, and Jangchung High School pitcher Yuk Seon-yeop. Coincidentally, there is a possibility that the hometown team Samsung Lions will take Jeon Mir. Samsung has the 4th pick after Lotte Giants. Jeon Mi-re said, “I was born in Daegu and grew up watching the Samsung Dynasty. I grew up dreaming of becoming a professional player, and I inevitably have a lot of affection,” but also said, “I can do well in other teams.”
Jeon Mi-reu has a desire to take on the challenge of batting as well as a professional player. He said, “If you ask me about my intention, I am confident that I can do both well. Of course, as the coach tells me, I will do my best wherever I am, pitcher if pitcher, hitter if hitter.”
The Presidential Cup is a meaningful tournament for Jeon Mir. This is because he was selected as the youth representative and this tournament is in fact the last high school stage. Jeon Mir said, “I came here to win two gold medals. I like being a youth representative, but now I’m focusing on playing in the Gyeongbuk High School uniform.”
